Cotton and the WTO - What Has Been Achieved
The issue of cotton subsidies in developed countries is one of the most contentious and challenging ones for the World Trade Organisation (WTO). In the past the WTO has maintained that cotton should not be considered separately from other agricultural products, and the USA has supported this stance.

However, the WTO stance was formally broken at the Doha Round ministerial conference in Hong Kong in December 2005, after a concerted two-and-a-half-year campaign by four West African cotton p.....

European Yarn and Fabric Fairs for Spring-Summer 2007
For some years it has been the policy of European spinners and fabric manufacturers to focus their energy on creating high quality, innovative yarns and fabrics while cutting back production of the more basic, high volume items which can not compete with similar goods made in low cost countries, particularly China and other Asian nations. Inevitably, this policy has resulted in a much smaller European yarn and fabric industry. Many European manufacturers have relocated their production to lower .....

Global Trends in Fibre Production, Consumption and Prices, October 2005 edition.
World man-made fibre output continued to rise in 2005 but at a much slower pace. Output was up by only 1.5% to 34.4 mn tons following a 6.5% hike in 2004. Moreover, the 2005 rise was sustained entirely by strong growth in China. Synthetics accounted for most of the increase—and all of the increase in synthetics was due to growth in polyester. But cellulosics were also up, by a healthy 5.3%.

Prices of most man-made fibres rose in 2005 as record oil prices led to higher raw material costs, .....

Innovations in Fibres, Textiles, Apparel and Machinery, Jan06 edition
Innovations enable firms to differentiate their products and become competitive. An Italian researcher has developed a technique for feeding elastomers to textile machinery and in the USA a new dyeable polyolefin yarn is a replacement for cotton. Healthtex has a polymer-grafted cotton for stain-resistant children’s garments. Liang Haw in Taiwan has devised a method for preventing pilling.

A Japanese innovator is using nanoparticles to prevent pollen from contaminating clothing. Bekaert ha.....

Nanotechnology Based Technical Textiles in Consumer Products.
Nanotechnology is the art and science of manipulating matter at the nanoscale to create new and unique materials and products. It is expected to lead to new medical treatments and tools, more efficient energy production, better access to clean water, more effective pollution reduction, and stronger, lighter materials. An estimated US$9 bn is spent annually on global research and development into the scope offered by nanotechnology.

In March 2006 an inventory of 210 commercially-available .....

Outlook for Asian Textile and Clothing Trade
On December 31, 2004, quotas were eliminated under the Agreement of Textiles and Clothing (ATC) and trade in textiles and clothing was thus reintegrated into the world trade system. When the ATC was conceived in 1994, the gains from quota elimination were expected to go to low wage and populous Asian countries such as India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand The losers were predicted to be small and marginal exporters, former large quota holders in East Asia, and firms in the EU .....

Profile of Spyder Active Sports.
USA-based Spyder specialises in high performance ski wear. Its highly respected products are designed for, and priced at, the top end of the market. Since the company began in 1978 it has sought to appeal to professional skiers and those who aspire to be like them. Indeed, it was founded—and is still managed—by a former Canadian ski champion, David Jacobs. The company grew steadily until the late 1980s when its sales began to grow exponentially.

“The high performance market just expanded .....

Profile of the Textile and Clothing Industry in Brazil
Brazil is the sixth largest textile and clothing producer in the world. Textiles and clothing are, in turn, important to Brazil’s economy. In 2004 the total production value of the textile and clothing sector was equivalent to 4.1% of Brazilian GDP. Its made-up sector—comprising clothing, hosiery and home linen—is second in size only to the service industries. After dramatic job cuts during the 1990s, employment in the textile and clothing industry reached a low point in 2002. Since then, howeve.....

Profile of the Textile and Clothing Industry in Syria
Hampered by domestic political pressures and a lack of international confidence, Syria’s economy is expected to grow by only 1.5% during 2006-07. With progress so slow, the government has targeted the textile and apparel industry—which accounts for 30% of Syria’s industrial employment—as a vehicle for growth and enterprise. Through the General Organisation for Textile Industry (Goti), the administrative centre of the public textiles sector, the government has invested heavily in new production f.....

Profile of the Textile and Clothing Industry in Ukraine.
The textile and clothing industry is Ukraine’s largest light industry and exporting sector. In 2004 it had 3,282 official enterprises employing 177,500 people. The domestic market is estimated to have been worth US$1.8 bn in 2005 and, due to rising personal incomes, is growing by around US$400 mn annually. However, much of this growing demand is expected to be supplied by imported low cost fabrics and garments. Exports of garments were worth over US$500 mn in 2003—the latest year for which compr.....

Profiles of 3 Leading Indian Exporters of Home Textiles.
Home textiles are among the most dynamic export segments in India’s textile industry. By focusing on the US market, India has become the USA’s leading foreign supplier of towels, and one of its top three foreign suppliers of cotton sheets. Its success in home textile exports stems largely from the efforts of a few dynamic companies such as Welspun India, Abhishek Industries and Alok Industries. These companies have become India’s top three home textile exporters and, spurred by their global ambi.....

Within Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), it is the number one exporter in both textiles and clothing. The textile and clothing industry is also important to Indonesia as it contributes significantly to the country’s economy. Indeed, .....

Trends and Developments in Textile Chemicals.

Advances in chemistry are also being made in collaboration with other scientific disciplines. Biotechnology, for example, is helping to meet growing demand for multifunctionality, more effective medical products, environmental compliance and renewable raw materials.

Chemists are responding to market pressures for higher performance technical textiles in sectors such as med.....

Trends and Innovations in the Denim Industry.
The world jeans market was worth US$49 bn in 2004. However, growth is slowing due to the popularity of alternative garments—such as combat trousers—and also, in part, to market saturation. Market saturation is, in turn, attributable to the emergence of new fabric and garment capacities in developing countries following the removal of quotas at the end of 2004. Indeed, about 50% of global denim capacity is now concentrated in Asian mills, and the bulk of this is in China.

Meanwhile, severa.....

It is now the world’s fourth largest import market after the EU, the USA, and Hong Kong, and is the third largest consumer of imports. In 2005 Japanese textile and clothing imports rose in value by 3.4% to US$27.5 bn as the economy continued to recover. After a 2.3% rise in 2004, real GDP grew by 2.6% in 2005 while private consumption growth picked up further to 2.1%.

Within this total, imports of apparel and made-up textiles each rose by 10.3% and their shares of all imports increased to 43.3% and 30.8% respectively, reflecting strong US demand for cheap clothing. Cotton increased its dominance of apparel imports in 2005 with a share of 58.1%.

In all MFA products cotton’s share was.....

World Textile and Apparel Trade and Production Trends, Edition 1, 2006
US textile output fell for the eighth time in 2005 as import volumes rose. Clothing output was down for the 11th year in a row despite healthy consumer spending. Surprisingly, textile industry profits rose sharply, and clothing profits by a comfortable margin. Meanwhile, China stepped up its sales to the USA although growth was more moderate.

In Argentina growth slowed after brisk expansion in recent years. Growth was also slower in Brazil as sales to the US market barely rose. Falling US.....
